Churros are a fried pastry stick that’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, covered in cinnamon and sugar which adds to the crispiness. This fried pastry can seem like it’s daunting to make, but it’s actually very simple.
These churros paired with a chocolate dipping sauce are irresistible. You can eat them as a dessert or even better, serve them at a party. All you need to make this recipe are a few simple ingredients, so there is no reason you should be making excuses about it being hard to make or expensive.
Step-by-step guide on making the best homemade churros:
For the churros:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups vegetable or canola oil
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp baking powder
- a pinch of salt
For the coating:
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup sugar
For the chocolate dipping sauce:
- 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips
- 3/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 tbsp salt
In a small bowl combine the sugar and cinnamon, and set aside for later.
In a medium-sized bowl combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Then add the boiling water and olive oil to the mixture and combine well, until batter thickens. Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a large open star tip.
Heat oil over medium-high heat in a medium-sized pot. Carefully pipe 6-inch long strips of dough into the hot oil, using scissors to cut the ends. Do about 3 churros at a time to avoid overcrowding your pot.
Cook churros until golden brown, making sure to slightly rotate every once in a while. Every batch should take about 2-3 minutes to cook. Transfer the cooked churros onto a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Then roll them in the cinnamon-sugar coating.
To make the chocolate dipping sauce put the chocolate chips in a medium-sized heatproof bowl. Then in a small saucepan bring heavy cream to a simmer over medium heat. After that pour the hot heavy cream over the chocolate chips, add the salt and mix until all the ingredients have combined.
Serve churros warm with the chocolate sauce and enjoy!
