Easy Homemade Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Like most of the shepherd’s pie recipe, this pie is made with ground beef, gravy, and frozen vegetables. Shepherd’s Pie is the perfect dish when the craving for comfort food strikes, especially in the winter. One of my favorite dishes when I want to feel cozy and warm.

This easy shepherd’s pie recipe is full of savory flavors with a tasty meat filling and some creamy gravy. Made in just 30 minutes, this recipe is a must-try. I bet this homemade shepherd’s pie will be one of your family’s favorite dishes, especially for your kids.

How to make the easiest homemade shepherd’s pie recipe:


  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 3 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup brown gravy
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
  • 3/4 cup yellow onion (finely diced)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 rib celery (finely diced)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • salt
  • pepper


Start by preheating the olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat.

Now, add the onions and celery. Sauté the mixture for approximately 3 minutes. Then add the garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Next, increase the heat to high and add the ground beef. Cook the ground beef until it browns and after drain off any excess fat.

After that, bring the heat back to medium-high and add the flour. Toss the mixture around so the flour coats all the ingredients.

Then add the tomato paste and thyme and cook for another 2 minutes.

Gradually add the chicken broth and using a spatula scrape of any brown bits on the pan.

Next, add vegetables and 1/2 of the gravy. Season the mixture with salt and pepper according to your taste. Also, feel free to add more gravy if desired. Then remove the mixture from the heat.

Now it’s time to assemble the shepherd’s pie. In order to do that, start by lightly greasing a 9-inch pan or a casserole dish. Once you’ve greased the pan or casserole dish, transfer the mixture into it.

Then spread the mashed potatoes on top. Using a fork, criss-cross the mashed potatoes for a great look and some crispy edges.

Set the oven to a high broil, around 550 °F and set the oven rack about 5-6 inches away from the broiler.

Finally, broil the shepherd’s pie for approximately 5 minutes, watching it closely the last minute or two so it doesn’t burn. Once it’s perfectly golden-brown, you can take it out of the oven.

If desired garnish with some chopped green onions or chives before serving.
