This homemade apple pie has a flaky, buttery crust and a tender, lightly-spiced apple pie filling. This pie made with apples, sugar, and cinnamon that are nestled between two layers of the tender and flaky crust is simply amazing and can’t be described unless you make and try it yourself.
Also feel free to make changes to the recipe to adjust your taste, for example, instead of white sugar you can use brown sugar or add less or more cinnamon depending on your preferences.
How to make homemade apple pie:
- 2 1/2 lbs apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 sticks of butter
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/3 cup of cold water
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
Preheat the oven to 375° F. First we’ll start of by making the pie crust dough, so cut 2 sticks of butter into cubes then put them in a food processor together with the flour, salt, and baking powder, and process for 30 seconds.
Add 1/3 cup of cold water into the food processor and process until the mixture turns into the dough (approximately 1 minute). Then take out the dough from the food processor and divide it into 2 equal pieces. After that using your hands shape the dough into balls then flatten them into a circle, wrap them using plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. After finishing with the pie crust dough we’ll begin making the apple filling and we’ll do that by adding lemon juice to the apple slices.
Afterwards, in a large non-stick pan over medium heat melt 3 tbsp of butter and add the apple slices, sugar, and cinnamon, stirring for about 5 minutes. After they finish cooking lift the apples from the pan and move them to the bowl, add cornstarch to the bowl and mix them together.
When all these preparations are done let’s start with putting the pie together. Butter the pie dish that you are gonna be using and lightly flour a rolling pin and a pastry board. Take the dough out of the refrigerator and roll out the first dough into a size that will fit into your pie dish, place the first dough into the pie dish and press it down firmly against the sides and bottom.
Put the apple filling in the pie dish on top of the dough. Roll out the second dough and lifting it carefully put it on top of the apple filling, pinching and wrapping the excess dough.
In a small bowl whisk the egg and brush the top crust with the egg wash. Using a knife cut slits or shapes in several places in the top crust in order to let steam escape. Put the pie in the preheated oven for approximately 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown. Lastly, remove the pie from the oven and let it sit for about 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
