A calzone is like a stuffed pizza pocket or a mini pizza, filled with classic pizza toppings that include meat, sauce, and cheese wrapped around pizza dough. If you are tired of always making pizza and want to switch it up a bit, then making this recipe might be what you need after all.
Making calzones is also very easy, the fillings are placed on one half of the pizza dough. Then the dough is then folded in half, pinched and sealed, coated with olive oil or egg wash, and baked in the oven.
How to make the best calzones:
- 1 lb pizza dough
- 1/2 cup pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
- 1/2 cup diced yellow onion
- 1/2 cup sliced pepperoni
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Start by preheating the oven to 425 F° and lining a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Then divide the pizza dough into 4 equal-sized pieces, and roll each dough ball into a 1/4 inch thick circle.
On one half of every dough circle, add the filling (sauce, yellow onion, green bell pepper, sliced pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese). Make sure to leave the edges clean to allow for sealing the calzone shut. Fold the dough over the toppings and crimp the edges.
Using a knife cut slits or shapes in several places in the top crust of the calzones in order to let steam escape. Brush the top of the calzones with olive oil or egg wash, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake the calzones for approximately 15 minutes or until the crust gets a golden brown color. Once the calzones are done cooking take, them out of the oven, serve with pizza sauce and most importantly enjoy!
